The Other Side π
You have already seen the right Axle Turn. This is the left one, and it is also called a check.
The check usually happens on 5 6 7, especially the 6 7, to get you back into your 1 2 3.
It is a one count turn on your left.
Follower: Steps and Technique π
Pay attention to the prep. That is where this turn is won or lost.
- prepare on 6
- start on 7, pushing the floor until 1
- finish on 1 2 3, then back to the basic 5 6 7
Technique:
- Engage your core.
- Bend and press the legs a little. Staying low is what lets you hold the axle.
- Keep your arms held in position rather than loose. Your arms are how you control the whole body.
- Keep your body connected, core included.
One count, in detail: prepare on the opposite side, on the right, on 6. Change the weight on 7, and that becomes the base leg of the turn. Turn pushing the ground on 7, and finish the turn on 1. Then return to the base, 2 3, 5 6 7.
π‘ Drill it: Do the prep alone, 6 and 7, without turning at all. If you cannot feel yourself pressing the floor on 7, the turn will not have anything to run on.
π― Community
Practice without judging yourself. Every dancer started exactly where you are. Be patient. This lands in the body over months, not days. Record yourself. You will see things you cannot feel. Post it in the community tab, or on Instagram tagging the page.
