The Flashy Ones ✨
Flicks are one of those moves that look extremely flashy, and once you are comfortable with them you can build a lot from them. The advanced course goes into serious combinations. This module gives you the fundamentals.
A flick is essentially an extension of the arm.
Concept One: Lead From The Forearm 💪
We always lead a flick from the forearm.
This is the mistake almost everyone makes:
A lot of people try to lead a flick from the hand. That does not really work.
What you do instead is switch to the forearm. Your palm faces up, and you have the connection from the wrist through the forearm. From there you can actually flick.
And the direction is fixed:
We always go from the forearm down.
Concept Two: Flick The Side She Is Opening To 🔀
We always give the flick when the Follower is opening her body to that side.
So if you want her to open to one side, you flick the hand on that side. You cannot flick the other hand while she is stepping the other way. It is not a stylistic preference, the move simply will not go anywhere.
Put plainly: check which foot she is stepping on, and flick the hand that matches.
For The Followers 💃
The thing to avoid:
Do not raise the shoulder while the arm is working, or you end up looking like you have no neck.
Keep the shoulder in its proper position, and do not be afraid to extend the arm.
Then when the arm reaches up, you have a choice. You can comb your hair, add an ornament, or simply relax the arm and give it back to him.
What decides it:
- you, if you feel like decorating
- him, how fast he is asking for your hand
If he throws the arm and then asks for your hand very quickly, you give it to him immediately.
That is the honest answer to when you can style and when you cannot. It is half your choice and half his timing.
💡 Drill it: Try to flick from the hand once, deliberately, so you feel it fail. Then switch to the forearm. You will not forget the difference.
🎯 Community
Practice without judging yourself. Every dancer started exactly where you are. Be patient. This lands in the body over months, not days. Record yourself. You will see things you cannot feel. Post it in the community tab, or on Instagram tagging the page.
