From the module notes

Welcome To Partnerwork 201 👋

This is the intermediate partnerwork course. Before anything new, we go back over every fundamental step from Partnerwork 101, because everything in this course is built on top of them.

If there is a step here you do not recognise, go back to that module in the previous course first. Learn it slowly, then come back.

The Speed Changes 🥁

One thing to expect straight away:

The drills in this course run at 160 BPM.

That is the average song speed when you go out to a social. We speed up here for the same reason we speed up in the Footwork classes, so that what you practise actually transfers to the dance floor and does not feel too fast when you get there.

What We Go Back Over 🔁

The basic, on 2. Then the turns:

  • Right Turn and Left Turn, for the Follower and for the Lead. Leads, learn both, they are yours too.

Then the walking steps, where the Follower crosses to the other side:

  • Cross Body Lead
  • Walkthrough
  • Enchufa, which starts from a Breakback

The fundamental idea underneath all three is the line. The middle line belongs to the Follower. The Lead can go to the line on the left or to the right, so when she crosses, he simply steps out of the line and then gets back in.

Then the traveling turns:

  • Inside Turn and Outside Turn. Both are a turn and a half. The Outside Turn travels the same way but to the right.

Then the moves that open up the more advanced material:

  • Right Axle Turn and left axle, which is also called the Check
  • Copa
  • Titanic and the shadow position

The Positions Worth Naming 📍

Titanic is when you are behind the Follower, holding right with right, with your left on her shoulder.

The shadow position is the opposite of that: you are on the other side, left to left.

Where The Axle Turns Sit 🎯

Everything else turns on 2. The Axle Turn does not.

The Axle Turn is a turn on 1. For the right axle you prepare a circle anticlockwise through 5 6 7, then turn her on 1.

The axle Left Turn, or Check, is the same idea on 6, 7.

Also Covered, Briefly 🤏

A couple of simple variations of your turns: the right to right handhold, the left to left handhold, and the Left Turn for the Leads as well as the Follows. These are simple on purpose. We cover much, much more in this course.

💡 Drill it: Get comfortable with the basic variations of your turns before you move on. That is the whole point of this module.
