Patterns, Your Modular Dance Toolkit 🧠
Pattern steps are modular and recyclable. The Braid Step is your first; a repeating sequence of back, open, cross that you can mix and match as you grow. Master this and you're ready for Star Patterns and Grapevines at the intermediate level.
The Kick: Snap, Don't Hold 🦶
Unlike a flare, the kick snaps back instantly, like a rubber band on the ankle. Straight leg, straight ankle, pointed foot. Movement comes from the knee.
Two Kick Variations
- Basic kick: lean forward, aim downward
- Brush kick: more upright. Brush the floor and flick upward, like scooping snow. Both snap back the same way.
Alignment Is Everything
Hips and knees face front. When you kick, your knee stays aligned with your standing leg. No turning the knee or hip out. ✅
🔬 Pointing your foot and aligning your knee isn't just aesthetic, it protects your joints and keeps the movement mechanically efficient.
