What This Module Trains 🎯
How to freestyle, changing the way you move depending on the instrument you interpret. The exercise is from Kwame and Fred, in Geneva.
The Idea 🧠
- Musicality. In musicality we don't really want to count, we want to listen and sing, we want to vocalize the sounds.
- Scatting. Scatting is when you are singing an instrument, and this is what we want to do when you want to be musical.
- Following the instrument. You really need to not just go automatically with the choreography, but listen to the instrument and do it to the instrument.
- Tres Tres. I'm gonna do a Suzy Q followed by a Tres Tres.
How the Drill Runs 🔁
- Make the combo automatic: basic, Suzy Q, Tres Tres, Left Turn, Mambo tap.
- Vocalize the instrument, then dance the steps to it.
- Twice through, then freestyle 30 seconds.
Four drills: Clave, Conga, two on the campana.
Technique Cues 💡
- Campana: a move on every strong hit.
- Embody the sharpness of the Clave.
- Use the shoulders.
💡 Drill it: repeat this days after days.
🎯 Community
Practice without judging yourself. Every dancer started exactly where you are. Be patient. This lands in the body over months, not days. Record yourself. You will see things you cannot feel. Post it in the community tab, or on Instagram tagging the page.
