Double Traveling Turn

Also called: double inside turn, double outside turn

Definition

These are very difficult, because we are doing two and a half turns. Put the Cha Cha on the 4 and 5. That is what lets you turn the double and a half that this step requires.

Double Traveling Turns, a module of Partnerwork 201

From the module notes

Two And A Half Turns πŸŒ€

You have the Double Turn. Now put it on the traveling turns, the double Inside Turn and the double Outside Turn.

These are very difficult, because we are doing two and a half turns.

That half is the whole problem. A traveling turn was already a turn and a half, and doubling it does not fit into the counts you normally have.

The Cha Cha Step Is The Answer πŸ‘£

So you buy yourself the extra count:

Put the Cha Cha on the 4 and 5. That is what lets you turn the double and a half that this step requires.

The footwork becomes:

1 2 3, four and 5, 6 7

Practise just that rhythm on its own before adding any rotation. If the Cha Cha is not automatic, the turn has nowhere to go.

Inside πŸ”„

Prepare on 1 2 3, then 4 and 5, 6 7. From the basic: 1 2 3, go on 6, 7, two, three, start the Cha Cha on four and 5, and resolve on 6, 7, then 1 2 3.

Outside πŸ”

  • prep on 1
  • start to spin on 2
  • three
  • the Cha Cha lands on four and 5
  • 6 7

Hold Your Arms πŸ’ƒ

Every balance tip from the earlier modules applies here, and one of them becomes critical:

Flex your knees, move your weight a little forward, and activate the core.

Do not let the arms go loose, because then you move the axis and you fall.

That is the real mechanism. Loose arms are not just untidy, they shift the axis of the turn, and once the axis moves at two and a half rotations you are going down. Hold the arms and the axis holds.

πŸ’‘ Drill it: Do the 1 2 3, four and 5, 6 7 rhythm walking in a straight line, no partner and no turn, until it is boring. Then add the rotation.
