Turns Start With the Prep 🔥
Your first turn is a Right Turn and it's built directly on your basic step. Same footwork, different direction. If your basic is solid, you already have the foundation.
The Prep Is Everything
On count 2, open your body slightly to the left. This creates the torque for a right spin on 3. Wind up opposite to the direction you're turning; always.
The Turn: Count 3
Step back on your right leg on 3, place your weight, and pivot through the turn. Your 5 6 7 then continues as normal. No extra steps. No rushing.
The Biggest Beginner Mistake ⚠️
Do not step on count 4. After your pivot on 3, you wait. Count out loud, 1, 2, 3 … 5, 6, 7, and hold yourself.
The best dancers stretch the time rather than rush through it.
Two Keys to Faster Progress 💡
- Spotting: fix your eyes on one point and snap your head back to it through the rotation
- Stay vertical: energy up, not sideways. Over your supporting leg, always
🧠 Turns feel disorienting at first. That's your brain rewiring. Stick with it and it clicks fast.
