What It Is π
A travelling turn, like the Inside Turn, but going right instead of left. It is a turn and a half.
The timing differs by direction:
turning right, you turn on 2
turning left, you turn on 3
Lead: Steps and Technique πΊ
You are simply stepping your Cross Body Lead while she turns.
- Lead it with the right hand
- Ask for the hand on 7
- On 1, invite her slightly forward
That invitation is what lets her turn. It is an invitation, not a pull. You are connected at the elbows and the hand, so her body follows.
The grip is a small hook made with the middle finger, like a pair of reverse scissors. Never the thumb.
Follower: Steps and Technique π
It is a walked turn, so you keep stepping the whole way, adding a little rotation of the feet.
- 1, the preparation, slightly rotated left
- 2, start the turn
- 3, travel
- 5, finish the turn, recovering the spot
- 6, back, without using the heel
- 7, forward
Keep looking for the Leader the whole time, his eyes, his chin, or his chest. Looking at that centre point closes the abdomen slightly and engages the core, which holds your position against the inertia of the turn.
Dance With Her π€
This one is difficult for the follow, so go with her. Keep your usual distance and keep the chests parallel.
π‘ Drill it: Once it is comfortable, offer the hand on 7 and take it on 1. That right to left connection is the doorway to the hand changes in Cross Body Lead styles.
π― Community
Practice without judging yourself. Every dancer started exactly where you are. Be patient. This lands in the body over months, not days. Record yourself. You will see things you cannot feel. Post it in the community tab, or on Instagram tagging the page.
