Arms, The Engine Behind the Look π
Two arm styles. Both have rules. Both look incredible when you own them.
The Mambo (Palladium) Arm
Elbow leads first, then hand projects forward, like picking up a box and placing it on a shelf. Think of throwing a dart: elbow up, then fire the hand forward with an accent, then relax back down.
Arms always move in opposition to your feet. Right leg steps β left arm moves.
The Salsa Arm π₯
Two layers working together:
- Windshield Wiper: rotation at the elbow; forearms alternating in and up
- Lateral elbow motion: one elbow comes in, the other pushes out (like an invisible connecting bar)
Combine both and you've got the classic Salsa On2 arm styling.
The One Rule
Elbows stay in front of your body. The sagittal plane is your boundary. Elbows behind your back = the "swimming" look. Keep all energy projecting forward. π―
Build the Layers π‘
Once comfortable in the basic, go back and apply arm styling to every step you know (Suzy Qs, turns, chord beats, in and outs). One layer at a time.
π― Arms are your personal signature. Experiment with both styles, with less and more bend at the elbow, with more or less energy; find what feels expressive and make it yours.
