Taps, Move Without Committing
A tap is a step without a weight change. Foot touches the floor, weight stays on the standing leg. Same family as kicks and flares; you're training your body to move a limb without following through with the full body.
Make It Sharp
Point your foot. Extend through the toes, not flat on the floor. Flexibility comes with time; even partial effort adds sharpness and polish.
Use your knee, not your hip. Lift the knee first, then extend down toward the floor, like kicking a bug.
Arm Opposition 🎯
Tap with your left foot → right hand comes up. And vice versa. This contralateral coordination is fundamental in Salsa; this drill builds it early.
Three Tap Positions
- Side of your standing foot
- Behind your standing leg (slight knee turnout)
- Crossed in front of your standing leg
These three positions unlock the diagonal tap and turning tap patterns from this module.
🔬 Contralateral coordination (opposite limbs moving together) is wired into your nervous system. This drill trains it. The more you do it, the more natural it becomes.
