What This Module Trains π―
Hearing the and 1 in the piano montuno, and highlighting it with two continuous steps.
The Instrument π₯
- Piano. The piano is very important to give the melody to Salsa.
- Montuno. The montuno is quite a smooth repetitive rhythm.
- The and 1. The loudest part in the montuno is the and 1.
- Syncopated. The piano is quite a syncopated instrument and usually plays the montuno.
- Juan Matos Pachanga. 1 2, flares, and then I repeat.
- Pachanga bounce. You can give it a little groove, so this is a Pachanga, so you give it the Pachanga bounce.
- Kick on and 1. Instead of just stepping my one, I'm gonna go kick on and 1.
- Step tap. Step on every odd count, tap on every even count.
How the Drill Runs π
- 5 6, basic, then Juan Matos on 1 2.
- Pachanga, kick step, basic.
- Step tap, nice and continuous.
- Travel: forward, back, turn, basic.
Technique Cues π‘
- Use the hip to push that leg out.
- Keep the step tap continuous, like the montuno.
- Step in any direction to travel.
π‘ Drill it: land your kick on the loud and 1.
