What You Will Learn 🎯
- Hear every instrument. The campana, congas, Clave, Bongo and Timbales, then piano, brass and vocals.
- Understand the counts. Where each instrument sits in the 8 counts, and its accents.
- Dance what you hear. Steps that mark each instrument, drilled on music.
- Improvise. Exercises on each instrument, so you are never lost in the music.
The Story 🧠
- Salsa. Salsa is an umbrella term, which means that Salsa actually reflects a lot of different types of music and also dance.
- Mambo. You have Mambo, which is more like On 2 or the Puerto Rican power On 2.
- Fania Records. Fania just rebranded it as Salsa, because the Latin music was dying out in America in the 70s.
How the Course Runs 🔁
- One instrument, or one idea in the music, per module.
- Hear it on its own, learn the counts, then steps that mark it and a drill on music.
- Then: 3 and a break, call and response, musical freestyle.
How to Use This Course 💡
- Cannot hear the Conga? Records put the percussion volume down.
- Look for the patterns that repeat, the hits and accents.
💡 Drill it: put on a Salsa song and try to listen to the Conga.
🎯 Community
Practice without judging yourself. Every dancer started exactly where you are. Be patient. This lands in the body over months, not days. Record yourself. You will see things you cannot feel. Post it in the community tab, or on Instagram tagging the page.
