Another Way To Bring It Down 🌊

The turn variations with all those handholds get crazy very quickly. You do not want to do that for a whole song. So here is another move you can use to slow things down.

This one is called a 360 Cross Body Lead, and it starts with a Breakback.

The Shape πŸ”„

  • 5 6 7, basic, one
  • Breakback, three, 5 6 7
  • ask for the frame
  • she wraps, then 1 you cross her, 2 you go round to the back, 3 you open up facing the other direction

Asking For The Frame πŸ€—

Worth knowing on its own, because it is not specific to this move:

Asking for the frame is universal. It means come into a close embrace, come into a frame.

Connection Is The Whole Move πŸ”—

This is where the 360 lives or dies.

You need to reach at least the middle of her back.

If your hand is barely on her side, you cannot spin the two of you at all. Reaching properly is what keeps the momentum going.

And it scales:

The quicker you spin, the more connection you need.

For a plain 360, a nice strong connection is enough. The more centrifugal force you start using, the further round you have to be.

Using It In A Song 🎢

A real pattern from social dancing:

  • 5 6 7, 1 2 3, cross body, 6, 7
  • another one on the other side, 6, 7, 1 2 3
  • smile, 6, 7
  • maybe a quick Inside Turn, 5 6 7, basic
  • then repeat

You can do this a bunch of times and give yourself a nice minute of the song to rest before going back into the crazy stuff.

For The Followers πŸ’ƒ

Two things matter most here.

Do not open the embrace. If the arm disconnects from the shoulder, the body opens and you stop being connected to the Lead. Keep the arm in position and you can travel the whole 360 route. Close your position in front of him and stay as close as you can while you go round.

Let the feet rotate. Open the leg, rotate it a little, and let the feet turn with you to maintain the axis of the turn.

πŸ’‘ Drill it: Check your hand position before you spin. Middle of the back, not the side. Almost every failed 360 is a connection that was too shallow to begin with.
