The Last Combination π
The final combination of the course, and it comes with a few genuinely cool tricks.
Flickomania π₯
Flickomania is a move I invented. It is just a combination of flicks that is very natural and very cool.
It is actually quite easy to do, but it looks very impressive.
That is a fair description of most good social dancing. The flick itself lands on 7.
Coming Out Of The Inside Turn β‘οΈ
- 5 6 7, then one, prep on 2
- as you prep, offer the other hand, your left to her right
- three, then five
- switch on 6, and bring back
- six, seven, bring her in
It is a little bit like a Copa, except I am not spinning her here.
Then the Titanic, and the block.
Tension Makes The Block π§±
Same principle as the Blocks module, stated concretely:
Here I need tension so I can block. She is stepping on her right, I am stepping on my left, and I have tension with this hand.
Block on 1, block again on 2, and on 3 bring her back and bring the right over.
The Hook Turn πͺ
Then a Hook turn, going behind on 5, 6, 7. You keep your hands where they are, right on top, and go under the tunnel.
If you do not know Hook turns, make sure you do the Mambo shines 101 and 201 courses so you are comfortable with your Footwork.
This is one of the places the partnerwork genuinely depends on the shines courses. The turn is a footwork move first.
Let The Cross Body Be Circular π
A lovely detail to finish on. Using the centrifugal force on 1, you step to the side and she steps open to the diagonal. That opening is borrowed straight from Cuban Salsa:
That's going to give her a bit like a Dile Que No in Cuban Salsa. It's going to give us a bit of a pull here.
Then one, two, three into a very nice Cross Body Lead.
It has a more Cuban flavour, and the reason it works:
On the Cross Body Lead you want to use a bit more circular motion. We do not need to keep every step in the line.
After a whole course spent talking about the line, that is a good note to end on. The line is the default, not a cage.
π‘ Drill it: Try the same Cross Body Lead twice, once strictly in the line and once with the circular motion. Feel which one gives you the pull.
π― Community
Practice without judging yourself. Every dancer started exactly where you are. Be patient. This lands in the body over months, not days. Record yourself. You will see things you cannot feel. Post it in the community tab, or on Instagram tagging the page.
