Inside Turn Handholds, a module of Partnerwork 201

From the module notes

Now Apply It To The Walking Turns 🚶

You have the handhold variations on the Right Turn and the Left Turn. This module takes exactly the same idea and applies it to the walking turns, starting with the Inside Turn.

From a parallel hold:

  • 5 6 7, 1 2 3, 5 6 7, 1 2
  • arms together on 2
  • on 3 she spins, and you go with the left
  • finish with the right

You land in the parallel cross position that comes from a Left Turn, and you can exit from there with a Right Turn, exactly as you did before.

The Same Entries You Already Know 🔁

The other variations carry straight over:

  • from the cross position with the left on top
  • into the window position, with your right on top, keeping the elbows up

Nothing new to learn there. That is the point of learning positions rather than memorising moves.

Exit While She Is Still Turning 🌀

Here is the one worth stealing:

You can exit as she is finishing her turn.

Instead of waiting for her to land and then starting your next thing, you go while the turn is still happening.

That is what gives the illusion of the crazy flicks and tricks.

It is not a harder move. It is the same move with better timing, and it is most of what makes advanced dancing look advanced.

Back To Back 🔄

With the right on top, there is a version where you do not stay still while she spins.

As she spins, you spin with her, keeping your back against her back. This is called a Back to Back.

How to make it work:

  • focus on the one hand
  • keep your back against her back, so you stay very close
  • as the left hand comes up, you finish

It is a little trickier than the rest of this module. It is also a genuinely cool move once you have it, and it feels good precisely because you stay close. If you drift apart it stops working.

💡 Drill it: On the Back to Back, the mistake is separating. Stay in contact through the whole rotation and the move does most of the work for you.
