Rumba (Afro-Cuban)

Also called: afro-cuban rumba, rumba

Definition

The authentic Afro-Cuban folkloric tradition (distinct from the ballroom "Rumba" of dancesport), encompassing Guaguanco, Yambu, and Columbia. It was folkloric, spontaneous, and intensely polyrhythmic, danced with deeply bent knees and a low center of gravity as an improvisational conversation between drummer and dancer.
